Where this comes from

Built on Australian Government open data: ASIC Business Names register and ABR, used under CC BY 3.0 AU.

We are not affiliated with ASIC, the ABR, or any government body. The count above is ours — a classification of the published register, not an official statistic. For official business counts, the Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes counts of Australian businesses on a different basis and a different cadence.

Questions

How often does this number change?

Weekly. ASIC publishes the business names register once a week, typically on Wednesdays, and this page is rebuilt against the newest complete week we hold. There is no live ticker here because the source is not live — a per-second counter would be theatre.

What counts as a new business?

A new business name registration on the ASIC register, or a new company on the ASIC company dataset. It does not count changes to existing registrations, renewals, or businesses that only obtained an ABN. Cancellations are tracked separately and are not netted off this figure.

Why does the state breakdown not add up to the total?

Because not every registration has a state recorded against it at the moment it is published. State comes from the Australian Business Register, and for the newest registrations that record can lag by a few days. Registrations without a state yet are in the total but in no state column.

Are these all the industries?

No, only the five largest this week. We classify every registration into twenty industries, and the long tail of smaller ones is not shown here. The statistics pages carry the full breakdown per industry, with trends.

Can I cite this figure?

Yes, with attribution to the source rather than to us: the underlying data is ASIC's, published as open data under CC BY 3.0 AU. Say which week it covers, because the number moves week to week and holiday weeks are markedly quieter.
